Getting Your Mind Right to Start Affiliate Marketing

you'll wake up to millions of dollars overnight. For anyone who has ACTUALLY done affiliate marketing
' [+ _% O7 q5 f, D$ Q: ]with any success, these claims are laughable and far from the truth.
- n6 v. [( l5 k T1 r0 X XAffiliate marketing is simply a business, like any other. There are customers, sales, suppliers and cash B2 o5 I$ m" ^% A
flow management. The main benefits are the low barrier to entry compared to other businesses, and

learning experience available to anyone with a few hundred bucks and the ability to open an

! W+ k e' ~9 z" m7 l( ]5 `! amarketing has spent countless hours learning, trying new things, launching, tweaking, improving,
" H& Z; G! L+ {: H3 Q+ d- Ltrying something else, failing. There isn't any guaranteed recipe for success except this: persistence.
; `8 z( R' ? k' xWith that in mind, this guide will explore just one internet traffic source, PPV, and is set up to get you

2.Affiliate account at a CPA Network (e.g. Ads4Dough, Neverblue)+ T0 m9 y( D3 S" C
3.Account at a CPV/PPV traffic network (e.g. LeadImpact, Trafficvance, MediaTraffic)
* H3 j: }+ N4 s/ m4.Tracking Setup to Track down to the keyword/url level (e.g. Prosper202 or CPVLab): f7 `. R! J9 L/ O
This guide describes from start to finish, how to get started in affiliate marketing by running traffic* [8 k Y- S/ K" \! e* _) o( G9 k
with PPV.

Z1 L$ n9 B7 z: y2 z" h* K0 rAffiliate Marketing- is an internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays one or more* ]2 l- I/ D; b/ X8 ?: ~& Y
affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. The two main

types off affiliate networks are cost per sale (CPS) and cost per action (CPA).7 l! i' W' g' d$ @- B
Cost per sale (CPS) network- Every time an affiliate sends a visitor who buys a product, the affiliate
% V) }1 a4 |9 Xreceives a commission on that product. An example would be the Amazon.com Associates program,
" K; b8 e4 z" z& L: a RComission Junction or Clickbank.2 B" J! @ @$ ~
Cost per action (CPA) network- The affiliate earns a commission by sending a visitor who completes
/ q" c" Q: Q/ m2 ean action like filling out a form, submitting their email address, signing up for a service or sometimes
. r4 A% [0 l" \buying a product. An example would be Ads4Dough or Neverblue.; x" u _- A1 u" F9 W
Affiliate Manager- an affiliate's contact at a CPA affiliate network who is responsible for the affiliate's
+ u6 |5 F$ I7 Daccount, getting the affiliate approved for offers, bumping payouts and just about everything else; X4 i# S3 i) N+ N( j c7 i* {8 ~
related to an affiliate's account at the network. Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager
1 q; ^8 [2 V# i# Y; Lright from the start can really help you.) ~6 T; g- g- T' k; E) P
PPV- means pay-per-view, and is also called CPV (cost-per-view). This type of internet traffic is served
$ l4 U, O. E4 a$ x/ Uin pop-up form through downloadable software on the visitor's computer. The advertiser pays per
* p: d. O1 G5 Hview, starting anywhere from .01 or .015.
7 o, r6 d7 x, w, D7 `In order to use this type of internet traffic, the affiliate can sign up with a number of different x" t ~+ u1 B- b3 ?1 c! w
companies who serve popups. The main PPV/CPV networks are Trafficvance, LeadImpact,6 S# I1 p4 D& z
MediaTraffic, and AdOn Network.3 p3 O- k/ w# Z2 r
Don't popups get blocked by pop blocker software?% [6 C: i* w4 ~
No. Popups are served in a new browser window as if the visitor had opened the new window

The number of popups served varies depending on the PPV network. Some pop more frequently8 O$ w; y, n) r( G" Q
(LeadImpact), others less frequently (Trafficvance). PPV advertising companies make their money by9 K, O" m2 ?) w) I# {' ^( r
serving this kind of advertising, so they have to toe the line between keeping their software, @# h. s8 b2 G0 `* z' I
downloaded and still making a profit.

No, this type of software doesn't harm the user's computer.
! s, |# i S: N. l, |! @# xCompanies that specialize in this type of traffic offer their visitor an incentive like screensavers, games,/ A( I5 y& Y& N7 i' y0 w2 R
toolbars or videos to place the software on their computer. The visitor keeps the software in place so

How to Get Accepted into a CPA Network; d: m4 W5 E- I+ K Y
In order to start marketing offers, it will be necessary to join one or more CPA networks. A good place
! b" c4 j: J& s' Rto start looking for networks is Offervault which lists offers and lets you compare payouts across0 ?+ g4 f6 J3 V3 r5 L2 Y
different networks.
5 ]; C3 S! ~/ l. B; ]6 e {" IOnce you find a network that you want to join, fill out the affiliate (sometimes called publisher)% y }2 P: y7 u
application and be as specific as possible about your promotion methods. Usually some time after ^: `2 @: c3 D
receiving your application, the company will call to interview you. The phone interview is a critical
' E. }3 C2 _$ Gpart of the application process, and most networks will deny your application outright if they can't get

Often, the person who does your phone interview will actually become your affiliate manager after" C- g4 P2 e, F/ Z( E$ E

You might not relish at the idea of someone grilling you about your internet marketing methods over

What methods do you use to market offers?

How much is your advertising budget?

Who are your affiliate managers at these networks?

/ \+ l( p2 H* N& ^+ C- VTo meet people from various networks, sometimes it can be effective to go to conferences like Affiliate
2 M4 ~' N0 i; Z+ x' H% H6 XSummit, or AdTech and make sure that you talk to people. Also, lots of affiliate managers and network c( h" L" |, t2 `& L
owners are members of the PPVPlaybook.com forum and WickedFire. Sometimes just getting to know

After You Join a CPA Network' w: v. x- t% Q6 m0 e% g
Once you're a member of a CPA Network, it's a really good idea to reach out to your affiliate manager
8 P0 s& d0 K% X/ e* M. n& gand make an attempt to get to know them a little bit.
' x$ N" D0 S1 L! EFrankly, there are great affiliate managers and horrible ones, and a good one can be worth their
* m; P! z0 ~8 R* ?( [weight in gold. Start feeling them out from the start and try to get to know them. Once you get, }! v* M0 f! N ~

3 ?. n o+ y9 M" GGetting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said# g& {8 c8 I( g! ^3 C% x5 @
about internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared( ^9 L0 G& t# y9 [
host for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with l5 F" }. Q+ B) a8 Q5 A6 I
whoever else is on the same server as you.
2 L7 T) W4 l1 r( K* XSpeed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast
6 w9 u* a) r$ V) oenough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 35 j( W: ^+ B) c2 o
seconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck.; f5 d( N8 }) t* J6 [$ L; c
To explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a
. c [ O/ X _( Q" u8 m, r- chouse full of roommates (hosting customers).
9 @& T8 h( h: T$ [In shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside- a' X" L% @8 y7 X" C. j: n2 p
the fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will: k) c/ T* C" w/ i1 _0 _
fit.
) y& Z: Y# e3 Q' `) }: gSay your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than
. L/ k' d7 Y/ v8 H+ R- hthe rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate

If you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For
" U0 W' I# n4 U A& }# @% jany type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.8 L" `6 P X- v( Q4 k! k
In the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space
5 g2 l) {# l {inside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is& K5 z, m2 `0 }* G8 ~ E
partitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time.! O, m% L2 \( X
A dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources* \3 B/ ?! p$ C! k) m
belong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more
* i& j* X( E3 m1 g3 @0 J: ntraffic, faster.4 Y' C* u* Y- p3 a1 y; d
At the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.2 q8 Y. c0 Q3 X) j1 j! d1 ~

% [" H) |# f0 d' w.net, .org extension doesn't really matter, this isn't a domain we're going to try to use to SEO rank for a
" m4 d3 D0 ^2 lterm or build a whole website.
( C. u/ ^2 s: J8 jAfter you buy hosting, a domain and get those all attached to each other, the next step is to install
* ~- e- P. n+ r- j4 N( ctracking software on your domain. This is really important, because it is necessary to track your
% l' J+ m1 O7 ] e7 ~! u* mconversions down to keyword level so that you can optimize your campaigns. Without proper

Tracking 202 is the hosted version of Prosper202. You can create a free account and then build your

) L- \9 A% R; G/ [8 fIf you choose this option, keep in mind that your tracking software, one of the most important parts of

interface, and their hosting.

that all traffic is accepted.
. X& A4 O7 ?& t9 \4 V* r7 |First, I log into Ads4Dough and click on Campaigns, then Email/Zip submits.

Before I do anything else, I'm going to place my tracking pixel from my tracking software so that I can
5 V# y' D* ^6 @% y* {, a! utrack my keywords. Without doing this, it isn't possible to see what's converting.
* R6 u7 a2 V* IIn Prosper 202, your pixel is located under Setup → Get Postback/Pixel and the screen looks like this:0 \% j/ e% }) S$ D% k: j9 V2 ]

Make sure that Image is selected under 'Choose a pixel type', name your pixel and now paste the URL
