ever-increasing list of gurus who claim to know (and be able to teach you) the “next big thing” where+ s2 I/ b9 D7 c8 Y, Y
you'll wake up to millions of dollars overnight. For anyone who has ACTUALLY done affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is simply a business, like any other. There are customers, sales, suppliers and cash$ Q- P6 A6 J. k* i( R8 e" K9 q
flow management. The main benefits are the low barrier to entry compared to other businesses, and

This guide describes from start to finish, how to get started in affiliate marketing by running traffic+ ?7 B6 L. m) H `3 i- v
with PPV./ g. V9 p6 t) b# _) N1 d
Basic Getting Started Definitions+ m# ^' L) o5 E$ c6 h
Affiliate Marketing- is an internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays one or more" D7 D9 Y. W0 t
affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. The two main0 I( ?( V3 h8 T/ ^( A0 O

" {3 g( q* a0 K6 d5 _( Itypes off affiliate networks are cost per sale (CPS) and cost per action (CPA).
! T2 f' }6 F$ J& j" h5 a3 fCost per sale (CPS) network- Every time an affiliate sends a visitor who buys a product, the affiliate2 F! O9 u7 N" P* A. B- @% x* Y
receives a commission on that product. An example would be the Amazon.com Associates program,% t, E* r3 I* l/ c! u+ x
Comission Junction or Clickbank.
, P2 ?7 P% B5 p! uCost per action (CPA) network- The affiliate earns a commission by sending a visitor who completes' g& x7 F9 B+ ~# s+ K; A
an action like filling out a form, submitting their email address, signing up for a service or sometimes
# v8 U( J0 |, [buying a product. An example would be Ads4Dough or Neverblue.# ]% }8 t; w+ x& ^* |4 g, Y) T
Affiliate Manager- an affiliate's contact at a CPA affiliate network who is responsible for the affiliate's2 y" E7 ~6 L$ z) F/ `* V$ o
account, getting the affiliate approved for offers, bumping payouts and just about everything else* F! t! ~& Z v+ s1 l8 N
related to an affiliate's account at the network. Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager
; K. P% ?4 G$ r0 y' S, y) v0 ^right from the start can really help you.
; v T1 X0 C4 fPPV- means pay-per-view, and is also called CPV (cost-per-view). This type of internet traffic is served: P0 u7 e6 C2 a, j! P2 _
in pop-up form through downloadable software on the visitor's computer. The advertiser pays per# E1 L+ e$ L& [
view, starting anywhere from .01 or .015.
! |4 J# Q/ z% P" m- NIn order to use this type of internet traffic, the affiliate can sign up with a number of different, V5 t' Q! W& K+ n+ {! `# l
companies who serve popups. The main PPV/CPV networks are Trafficvance, LeadImpact,
o( n8 \/ _# G* B. @8 j" FMediaTraffic, and AdOn Network.

No. Popups are served in a new browser window as if the visitor had opened the new window9 a! g7 Q0 G% Q. H4 F( F. U5 j

How many popups get served to the visitor?
* y% N% q# X! B! OThe number of popups served varies depending on the PPV network. Some pop more frequently+ g4 z! U" @) K+ g9 C j
(LeadImpact), others less frequently (Trafficvance). PPV advertising companies make their money by
& t1 \, H/ {" j' j8 Z9 q8 k3 v! \serving this kind of advertising, so they have to toe the line between keeping their software
* P0 g$ F0 Y2 Y; Y8 D4 m" ydownloaded and still making a profit.
$ }& F( V& O. [2 E- T$ |Isn't this type of software bad? Why would anyone keep it on their computer?
6 F; o: v' g5 Q- V. o6 vNo, this type of software doesn't harm the user's computer.
@7 Y4 A: E2 \3 O% m4 yCompanies that specialize in this type of traffic offer their visitor an incentive like screensavers, games,
& c7 B7 _2 V! D/ mtoolbars or videos to place the software on their computer. The visitor keeps the software in place so
/ [; |5 ]; O6 i9 o9 _' V* Y2 `that they can continue to have access to the incentive.

How to Get Accepted into a CPA Network
$ P2 A/ k3 O2 i( ^In order to start marketing offers, it will be necessary to join one or more CPA networks. A good place
8 X" \7 g# M) ito start looking for networks is Offervault which lists offers and lets you compare payouts across" {8 B# [# S: R8 m5 n+ u3 k. o
different networks.
$ P5 U3 e/ _. P4 V D" ?/ f3 `Once you find a network that you want to join, fill out the affiliate (sometimes called publisher)
" C- e0 e) z$ {+ f! b9 X' Vapplication and be as specific as possible about your promotion methods. Usually some time after
9 T7 k3 v- H/ N$ }receiving your application, the company will call to interview you. The phone interview is a critical
/ Z: m9 J9 J* F' spart of the application process, and most networks will deny your application outright if they can't get
3 ^ f. |' R# B5 f; `# byou on the phone.! a5 z+ v6 p$ r+ {) E& B; h L9 z
Often, the person who does your phone interview will actually become your affiliate manager after
! I8 x `' P r) h1 P4 ^9 @4 @5 ayou get accepted, so it's a good time to put your best food forward.: e" q" ]8 c* m. V
You might not relish at the idea of someone grilling you about your internet marketing methods over/ o) Y( A1 c1 C7 l* |' V! U# |
the phone, but trust me, this part is critical. Have answers in mind for the questions:
1 K: ~& j9 y8 AWhat methods do you use to market offers?
5 Y2 f4 C8 [/ p6 @Do you already have a website you will be using?
0 L" _8 \8 s, T7 \# {3 IHow much is your advertising budget?

Who are your affiliate managers at these networks?
" B8 M) E! C, T. R8 n- A- rDo you use social media (Facebook, twitter, etc.) to market offers?

Once you provide satisfactory answers to these questions, the network will approve or deny your
- B- B# A/ L1 k6 D; H4 e1 e& k# w% Vapplication. If you get denied, just keep applying or call someone on the phone and try again. Be4 N2 {* h/ c& E t4 O' \0 V! I
persistent. Also, getting a personal recommendation from someone who is already an active affiliate: k4 G6 q4 Q t" {- x
for the network can be helpful.

After You Join a CPA Network
# ]& I5 u$ M* k) O% OOnce you're a member of a CPA Network, it's a really good idea to reach out to your affiliate manager- L! q8 s- ]) V2 K; C
and make an attempt to get to know them a little bit.+ W4 ^$ N, l5 _! s0 U; P/ e& _
Frankly, there are great affiliate managers and horrible ones, and a good one can be worth their
/ {' o- Z- ~6 q2 I- }$ Oweight in gold. Start feeling them out from the start and try to get to know them. Once you get& @# x; c7 F: T& e' r2 Z {

. M8 g' V( ~+ m3 J9 X) ^Getting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said
, W8 \$ n; f1 _( C/ k7 g kabout internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared
; A6 W: }7 i) W6 W& t4 e4 q$ ?host for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with! G2 j( {, ] b2 Z6 T) o( b6 o
whoever else is on the same server as you.( }) i/ D9 z" H9 X4 f
Speed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast# O5 U+ I5 L7 ^* ^ `, C
enough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 3; i1 N2 E. V5 L; b" `
seconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck.1 x* L: C2 t2 |" `. G! P) I
To explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a+ |8 Q' g0 t$ R2 G$ ~/ ~( ?) K
house full of roommates (hosting customers).3 {: a3 q+ A& R5 k) ^
In shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside
0 I1 t9 H5 h" H! ]9 m7 Jthe fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will
/ a. R2 U' I7 b; Q" j7 Vfit.5 n5 m, o" {4 A
Say your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than- ~8 _: X9 o" W
the rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate- v6 y B( i* V, U( q
their food. Everyone else's food in the house has less space to take advantage of.
2 z7 B, j- r- j( M* p/ B) C8 OIf you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For8 J7 G6 q+ k$ q4 K8 i9 b& C
any type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.
5 @0 Q$ o8 D: p( v- C1 zIn the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space
& d6 z; g* q0 L4 u4 [2 \inside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is
' s) b9 x) B) @% C# M& Y4 Spartitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time.
6 L# P0 \( p& w. n+ s# LA dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources5 P2 h% f& w" {0 K6 Q% {0 D' [
belong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more1 r, p% j1 W6 u) B
traffic, faster.
* W; l% u- G% `9 M" L; w6 T& |At the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.* Q+ T2 C6 Y, _" j+ e g

.net, .org extension doesn't really matter, this isn't a domain we're going to try to use to SEO rank for a

After you buy hosting, a domain and get those all attached to each other, the next step is to install
/ S P, m; ?7 j( V. ptracking software on your domain. This is really important, because it is necessary to track your) n6 d6 h a: S9 O
conversions down to keyword level so that you can optimize your campaigns. Without proper5 o) S" A2 S' n+ G% A( c
tracking, it is impossible to know what is working and what isn't.. }# y- X0 z7 r) X7 v- P, B

When you choose an offer, always make sure that it accepts PPV traffic, usually this is listed on the first
4 W) l2 m( x/ Apage as contextual, downloadable software. This $1,000 Walmart gift card email submit offer says- _- r% }5 M- N, e2 g8 p
that all traffic is accepted.
. B. X# I9 o( C2 ZFirst, I log into Ads4Dough and click on Campaigns, then Email/Zip submits.3 g( I7 h# `" O9 w7 K- p9 T9 M
This is where I get my link for the offer, place my tracking pixel from Prosper202 or CPVLab, and can1 t" g* e0 c" `* x t5 x1 ~
get creatives like banners or images specifically for the offer.

Before I do anything else, I'm going to place my tracking pixel from my tracking software so that I can

0 y) k3 b$ T: h) \4 j; z7 S, VIn Prosper 202, your pixel is located under Setup → Get Postback/Pixel and the screen looks like this:

Next, I have to cut and paste this pixel into my offer at Ads4Dough.0 F7 T/ d, E) M
Click on the offer → pixels → Add a new pixel and this comes up:
1 `" F, A# \$ x) @# T8 YMake sure that Image is selected under 'Choose a pixel type', name your pixel and now paste the URL
