Getting Your Mind Right to Start Affiliate Marketing
( t" T6 y- V1 KThe affiliate marketing space is filled with offers, internet traffic sources, promotion techniques and an7 x' h7 R/ [. o5 L+ W
ever-increasing list of gurus who claim to know (and be able to teach you) the “next big thing” where" `" m9 k2 y+ B; p- l; y$ x
you'll wake up to millions of dollars overnight. For anyone who has ACTUALLY done affiliate marketing) Y; Q9 V% w* l, } k
with any success, these claims are laughable and far from the truth.! Z) I$ u% Z: B' q* }& ~2 h! i
Affiliate marketing is simply a business, like any other. There are customers, sales, suppliers and cash/ u) K# O6 B+ o
flow management. The main benefits are the low barrier to entry compared to other businesses, and7 `: K' d) y/ g
the ability for a marketer to be a one person shop and make an incredible amount of money with low
! m7 z7 g! A+ Goverhead.

Things you need to get started:

4.Tracking Setup to Track down to the keyword/url level (e.g. Prosper202 or CPVLab)

Basic Getting Started Definitions
7 Q% a; A. W3 {: @ fAffiliate Marketing- is an internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays one or more
+ W, w- F- H$ j% W7 c$ r! Faffiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. The two main; B0 d- A3 y f' W

! ^3 a3 W# L8 `' Ptypes off affiliate networks are cost per sale (CPS) and cost per action (CPA).3 b% n1 I- V$ [ c$ K
Cost per sale (CPS) network- Every time an affiliate sends a visitor who buys a product, the affiliate( ~4 }1 b& B5 U0 K+ _7 p# P$ p
receives a commission on that product. An example would be the Amazon.com Associates program,
( d) u: Y, A% i, c6 r( A3 SComission Junction or Clickbank.
) a' Q* ]2 f5 B: Q% E" FCost per action (CPA) network- The affiliate earns a commission by sending a visitor who completes7 |& c7 o+ T" n0 N' X
an action like filling out a form, submitting their email address, signing up for a service or sometimes
/ u' i( R0 B( D8 `$ q4 V+ Tbuying a product. An example would be Ads4Dough or Neverblue." R2 `* D4 I- K' Y9 Z6 I4 |
Affiliate Manager- an affiliate's contact at a CPA affiliate network who is responsible for the affiliate's. u: |4 m; A, R& `# E0 T$ `; x b% H, u
account, getting the affiliate approved for offers, bumping payouts and just about everything else
9 _/ `+ x5 _8 c6 q3 O+ Brelated to an affiliate's account at the network. Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager
$ X6 B' U+ O2 L# tright from the start can really help you.8 N" u* {4 u5 d; t* ~
PPV- means pay-per-view, and is also called CPV (cost-per-view). This type of internet traffic is served$ [4 w4 J S/ c8 Z
in pop-up form through downloadable software on the visitor's computer. The advertiser pays per9 z% q7 t5 z& A
view, starting anywhere from .01 or .015.
' A, U/ t2 i4 e G' [: Z) h+ sIn order to use this type of internet traffic, the affiliate can sign up with a number of different
/ z6 c6 \# M+ Ncompanies who serve popups. The main PPV/CPV networks are Trafficvance, LeadImpact, x* {( y% @3 Z- M
MediaTraffic, and AdOn Network.
' z T) g% A; e5 p7 pDon't popups get blocked by pop blocker software?7 c% k% V6 g G( M5 _
No. Popups are served in a new browser window as if the visitor had opened the new window$ W& d. r7 i6 W1 L& \! Q# I) J; j3 ]2 c
themselves.
5 Q& G" L& j- k% N, V8 yHow many popups get served to the visitor?# S4 c; r& p8 [6 W
The number of popups served varies depending on the PPV network. Some pop more frequently, ^0 t6 a( i& J& ~
(LeadImpact), others less frequently (Trafficvance). PPV advertising companies make their money by$ d$ f6 l8 j* L% y r: T) X
serving this kind of advertising, so they have to toe the line between keeping their software

No, this type of software doesn't harm the user's computer.# g& I/ A8 L6 e! r2 Z
Companies that specialize in this type of traffic offer their visitor an incentive like screensavers, games,/ o7 ^6 O2 V$ p
toolbars or videos to place the software on their computer. The visitor keeps the software in place so% p# y: a- E9 w6 g& V# D+ ^
that they can continue to have access to the incentive.

How to Get Accepted into a CPA Network
& v: j5 V9 v: [- Z' pIn order to start marketing offers, it will be necessary to join one or more CPA networks. A good place
9 X4 e$ K% }* J# `3 z, ]0 gto start looking for networks is Offervault which lists offers and lets you compare payouts across( }* X/ a5 T+ q; K t* }6 O( P
different networks.
; Y2 ~7 i# r+ w- nOnce you find a network that you want to join, fill out the affiliate (sometimes called publisher). H4 b# S2 o6 m3 w: X, ^
application and be as specific as possible about your promotion methods. Usually some time after
8 D: B9 L2 y' R4 Greceiving your application, the company will call to interview you. The phone interview is a critical
! r. Q W) c' }5 @8 j( f* Dpart of the application process, and most networks will deny your application outright if they can't get' m- G5 b& F; g* R
you on the phone.) D4 c$ @- p0 {2 z( U2 f! R( ~3 `
Often, the person who does your phone interview will actually become your affiliate manager after

You might not relish at the idea of someone grilling you about your internet marketing methods over

Once you provide satisfactory answers to these questions, the network will approve or deny your4 c7 E2 I6 x/ \5 \+ @3 [
application. If you get denied, just keep applying or call someone on the phone and try again. Be
7 s1 o% y- d' C8 `6 ?$ {+ t6 Gpersistent. Also, getting a personal recommendation from someone who is already an active affiliate% G1 z8 S$ V7 @* s5 r
for the network can be helpful.1 w) B! V7 r6 b! Q
To meet people from various networks, sometimes it can be effective to go to conferences like Affiliate
* S, O; s4 q, G( j, l0 ISummit, or AdTech and make sure that you talk to people. Also, lots of affiliate managers and network }; y2 o0 }9 T+ }

people can open a lot of doors as far as networks are concerned.

" }: b1 A9 Q4 cOnce you're a member of a CPA Network, it's a really good idea to reach out to your affiliate manager

Frankly, there are great affiliate managers and horrible ones, and a good one can be worth their- p- K) a7 V6 j- h8 _
weight in gold. Start feeling them out from the start and try to get to know them. Once you get

, e% g& r0 C: M; X1 EGetting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said+ G9 e" Z! q5 b0 ?9 m
about internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared
: H% f# x: n" p3 n! D; rhost for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with( L% E- Y; M% a! N
whoever else is on the same server as you.
; z/ a; b4 W( PSpeed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast9 n6 m- O( p( {; I! i' A1 P. N
enough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 3
2 J! ]0 S1 I% e2 l, hseconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck.- k5 {* a; _' W! S3 t- C# U+ ?) _2 U
To explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a* x( U W# M3 k6 p4 P) z! S7 T
house full of roommates (hosting customers).
( R8 H& g; F( y# Z: dIn shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside! p+ w# V! B6 k
the fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will$ I) ?9 U+ ?2 w4 I& B
fit.7 @, d& M. x7 o* W: x: v
Say your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than
/ I: j7 ^" S6 i4 r, g, m8 gthe rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate1 Q; e% @3 {1 a: N" U
their food. Everyone else's food in the house has less space to take advantage of.0 P& P) G7 m. z/ w: N! P
If you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For3 @+ {3 B' q3 q6 Z% p" J( {0 b* K
any type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.
+ g1 a* w& [3 Q4 {: p$ L: m# DIn the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space; c. P |; V }2 s4 `/ ?
inside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is$ }3 u4 _5 B; P: g
partitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time.
# @! y3 u( |7 cA dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources
! q( {8 m3 K+ K! i7 Z' b" }belong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more! N% f9 b0 G* Z4 L! j- x1 t
traffic, faster.
. k( g* w9 @! L- ]4 hAt the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.

bland one is fine to start with, to host both your landing pages and tracking software. The .com,
$ X* ^7 j* k6 W: J.net, .org extension doesn't really matter, this isn't a domain we're going to try to use to SEO rank for a: Y& y1 K, X& m! g: Z. E
term or build a whole website.
' |, N* t5 K$ @5 y% [. tAfter you buy hosting, a domain and get those all attached to each other, the next step is to install- a# {1 p2 A7 c7 h$ [1 [
tracking software on your domain. This is really important, because it is necessary to track your
$ D- w5 H% ^$ rconversions down to keyword level so that you can optimize your campaigns. Without proper
& K* E+ n' \- P" [" N" V! itracking, it is impossible to know what is working and what isn't.

; Q x# z! i- G; Y5 {When you choose an offer, always make sure that it accepts PPV traffic, usually this is listed on the first

First, I log into Ads4Dough and click on Campaigns, then Email/Zip submits.

get creatives like banners or images specifically for the offer.# F$ S0 M9 i" l# g4 p# e" u

7 ^% \' ~+ L, q0 Z) _In Prosper 202, your pixel is located under Setup → Get Postback/Pixel and the screen looks like this:

Next, I have to cut and paste this pixel into my offer at Ads4Dough.

Make sure that Image is selected under 'Choose a pixel type', name your pixel and now paste the URL- ]/ d( j' |5 ]4 a" I
