ever-increasing list of gurus who claim to know (and be able to teach you) the “next big thing” where7 q/ D- E7 U6 O$ ]" J. L/ i v
you'll wake up to millions of dollars overnight. For anyone who has ACTUALLY done affiliate marketing
7 k" r4 r$ y8 E" U+ a. U7 D) Y+ ?with any success, these claims are laughable and far from the truth.1 U+ M( {7 w' o; J* p
Affiliate marketing is simply a business, like any other. There are customers, sales, suppliers and cash$ G6 Q/ ?' L; G$ R
flow management. The main benefits are the low barrier to entry compared to other businesses, and

The cold hard reality is this: virtually everything in the space is changeable, what worked today can

where you're likely to get rich overnight. Everyone I've ever met who has been successful at internet+ U! f* ?2 w( k& ]/ b; L$ h. U
marketing has spent countless hours learning, trying new things, launching, tweaking, improving,3 x. Q# k' C2 Q- S
trying something else, failing. There isn't any guaranteed recipe for success except this: persistence.

1.Web Hosting- preferably a VPS (virtual private server) or higher (e.g. Beyond Hosting, Hostgator)
6 G: z m! {5 z3 G$ I5 t2.Affiliate account at a CPA Network (e.g. Ads4Dough, Neverblue)
: S* m+ r( r2 E+ c% S; h3.Account at a CPV/PPV traffic network (e.g. LeadImpact, Trafficvance, MediaTraffic)
0 B& f0 e) p5 o- b% D6 B; v4.Tracking Setup to Track down to the keyword/url level (e.g. Prosper202 or CPVLab)
% ^$ `" s! ^# m1 E! m, K& x) BThis guide describes from start to finish, how to get started in affiliate marketing by running traffic `9 O$ j2 [: c( H( f0 p, M! j E

Basic Getting Started Definitions! W& A3 l6 H, K$ |
Affiliate Marketing- is an internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays one or more
% k R% R; t3 t5 Q2 X$ caffiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. The two main

8 ?: H! `. d7 C" z% H) fCost per sale (CPS) network- Every time an affiliate sends a visitor who buys a product, the affiliate/ o5 N) V! k: g( }' E3 M
receives a commission on that product. An example would be the Amazon.com Associates program,2 R( p: E" V( V( w
Comission Junction or Clickbank.
6 m; I% I0 \" y) ^# r* H, OCost per action (CPA) network- The affiliate earns a commission by sending a visitor who completes4 t% R6 F1 L, {- ~
an action like filling out a form, submitting their email address, signing up for a service or sometimes
4 k. b) a. h! _ Pbuying a product. An example would be Ads4Dough or Neverblue.7 O& w7 a, ]) W7 @. {. N
Affiliate Manager- an affiliate's contact at a CPA affiliate network who is responsible for the affiliate's
/ p( Z* f- {' \account, getting the affiliate approved for offers, bumping payouts and just about everything else1 I! S% `2 e: S' z, O
related to an affiliate's account at the network. Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager
2 k/ J. z; ?# U4 jright from the start can really help you.5 N5 H- P7 K1 O& a
PPV- means pay-per-view, and is also called CPV (cost-per-view). This type of internet traffic is served. W4 X6 W) y; Z0 J
in pop-up form through downloadable software on the visitor's computer. The advertiser pays per
- i! _' n* V# J/ sview, starting anywhere from .01 or .015.) R. r3 O1 o& k: O
In order to use this type of internet traffic, the affiliate can sign up with a number of different. N! W# {; h2 y7 R+ ~! ?) r D
companies who serve popups. The main PPV/CPV networks are Trafficvance, LeadImpact,9 d4 H! v, F$ V b% Y
MediaTraffic, and AdOn Network.8 p8 W. |$ O$ M Y9 `, V7 H# J
Don't popups get blocked by pop blocker software?

How many popups get served to the visitor?

serving this kind of advertising, so they have to toe the line between keeping their software

No, this type of software doesn't harm the user's computer.
& D: m) u- f, P+ G: xCompanies that specialize in this type of traffic offer their visitor an incentive like screensavers, games,# E8 a7 L. j& u/ X/ T
toolbars or videos to place the software on their computer. The visitor keeps the software in place so

e0 n l, h( t& vIn order to start marketing offers, it will be necessary to join one or more CPA networks. A good place
/ A q9 I, W# ^' [6 c. qto start looking for networks is Offervault which lists offers and lets you compare payouts across E- a% r' a* V( h5 \" h9 u
different networks.
9 _2 ~1 ]/ a' p% G( IOnce you find a network that you want to join, fill out the affiliate (sometimes called publisher)
& z1 g9 I) n p _$ d, z& w6 Gapplication and be as specific as possible about your promotion methods. Usually some time after. F& ~; V3 l6 Q! I
receiving your application, the company will call to interview you. The phone interview is a critical
. C0 J' [- ~2 O% Vpart of the application process, and most networks will deny your application outright if they can't get
" Z* v. j, ]( Z( p1 q( ~you on the phone.
# t( C# q+ Y9 R) LOften, the person who does your phone interview will actually become your affiliate manager after* |3 ^5 d; v7 d8 L9 H; G' ]. u8 g# [
you get accepted, so it's a good time to put your best food forward.
+ H( \' k# l4 wYou might not relish at the idea of someone grilling you about your internet marketing methods over
1 K3 b# w; [$ M- Nthe phone, but trust me, this part is critical. Have answers in mind for the questions:* @7 S' [+ L$ z
What methods do you use to market offers?
2 p0 H9 s( Z2 g/ m6 pDo you already have a website you will be using?
8 A. ^$ g+ D7 n. H5 }* VHow much is your advertising budget?

Do you use social media (Facebook, twitter, etc.) to market offers?

Once you provide satisfactory answers to these questions, the network will approve or deny your( n5 s& z7 v( H' G' _* y- @4 l K
application. If you get denied, just keep applying or call someone on the phone and try again. Be
/ ^6 D# ~3 y+ h ^# j3 X# xpersistent. Also, getting a personal recommendation from someone who is already an active affiliate v# V; Z7 Z7 J& l

To meet people from various networks, sometimes it can be effective to go to conferences like Affiliate) e* f! B9 r+ t$ ^: n0 C
Summit, or AdTech and make sure that you talk to people. Also, lots of affiliate managers and network2 D% C( n7 p. X: t# G$ i* |
owners are members of the PPVPlaybook.com forum and WickedFire. Sometimes just getting to know

Once you're a member of a CPA Network, it's a really good idea to reach out to your affiliate manager
% Q6 U& @! D o- Aand make an attempt to get to know them a little bit.& l' ]" }6 W- o2 {, D1 S
Frankly, there are great affiliate managers and horrible ones, and a good one can be worth their9 v/ K( N0 S3 o. {; h
weight in gold. Start feeling them out from the start and try to get to know them. Once you get0 ]$ x& n) [. U8 R. A) j

Set Up Web Hosting
/ N* Q. D$ x% V; EGetting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said
& {- ^/ B3 m- ?& X: Rabout internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared
* c' j6 u: l+ S5 J' Z; y- R7 Xhost for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with
6 ~, R a9 u6 r" V. q& |whoever else is on the same server as you.
9 w! v a; L+ RSpeed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast
" o O( i- G& }, V: t3 |enough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 30 o* L( C( D- Z. N% c$ P2 h
seconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck.
: e9 ^3 m) n5 |4 K* T2 {1 _To explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a" L0 W1 x& F2 u7 n" ?. H$ K
house full of roommates (hosting customers)., T. O* N7 X- X1 U7 I6 L2 |
In shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside8 x1 X$ T6 k( d! R8 U8 g; y6 u6 R) |& @8 b
the fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will) a9 ~' }3 R* u# u' }
fit.' s9 {( e9 C! |) j4 W, r/ N
Say your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than4 ?& z& U, _8 C2 X- U# l4 R g
the rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate$ m. O/ m" x) |$ {% k w
their food. Everyone else's food in the house has less space to take advantage of.
7 T8 l8 [/ V/ RIf you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For
% Y4 X7 O' l; f, Z; s; G" W1 `) D0 X0 ~9 Many type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.1 ^4 H) Q+ w9 B5 T4 U6 V6 M
In the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space
/ F2 l# C6 L0 v7 t* ^# Finside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is
% G' l F$ f1 I' Tpartitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time." y. O5 J- x! q1 e
A dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources
/ U* p3 i7 m2 Z0 \belong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more
* R9 E$ ^: w8 z2 [4 O/ ]5 `traffic, faster.
: g5 D4 _8 a# e0 SAt the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.
4 S* F4 R; \* fAnother good discussion of the difference seen by someone using shared vs vps hosting for PPV is

# r/ }6 Y1 T! H; ]2 w+ |; AOftentimes people wonder if they should have a specific domain name or a generic one. One generic,1 l! X& }; t; }; d3 P; i2 ^
bland one is fine to start with, to host both your landing pages and tracking software. The .com,, g6 B' l# L! E" B, \+ v% f* U7 A
.net, .org extension doesn't really matter, this isn't a domain we're going to try to use to SEO rank for a
$ b+ t$ h2 _9 ^; ^5 E1 C! Hterm or build a whole website.
# d- L+ V7 u1 |( @After you buy hosting, a domain and get those all attached to each other, the next step is to install
5 T9 H2 q; j6 e( [; p1 e0 J9 Ytracking software on your domain. This is really important, because it is necessary to track your5 h. X( F8 f" g7 ]9 h
conversions down to keyword level so that you can optimize your campaigns. Without proper
* L1 \0 K$ A' w7 o9 b1 Ttracking, it is impossible to know what is working and what isn't.9 g8 r k7 B2 M% E5 s

Tracking 202 is the hosted version of Prosper202. You can create a free account and then build your
* I$ \0 n- I n" mcampaigns using the Tracking202 internet-based interface which is similar to the Prosper202 user& [. X5 M- l. ]/ s' J `
area.
0 k2 k, M! w% a, S; iIf you choose this option, keep in mind that your tracking software, one of the most important parts of
% @8 C I3 O- [your campaigns and through which all of your affiliate links are run- is at the mercy of the Tracking202* Y( A% f! P1 u5 \8 W$ P
interface, and their hosting.
+ q* l2 S! ^; D% ?* N: pAlso, your tracking software reveals the most critical part of your campaigns- the converting keywords
8 x) ?) j$ R4 @and targets which you are bidding on. Leaving this up to chance in order to save money could( L( P" J1 Q% l+ b
potentially leave you open to huge risk if someone else caught on to what offer and keywords you

Now, we're going to go to the CPA Network that we joined and look for an offer to send PPV traffic to.

that all traffic is accepted.1 w" o. d( Q6 e( ~, G9 v
First, I log into Ads4Dough and click on Campaigns, then Email/Zip submits.
9 s" s; r6 F6 x, d- r9 T/ U' zThis is where I get my link for the offer, place my tracking pixel from Prosper202 or CPVLab, and can
, i5 A5 X% C8 f- [# Q* Y9 ?get creatives like banners or images specifically for the offer.2 `3 j( Q6 Y. m" I

Before I do anything else, I'm going to place my tracking pixel from my tracking software so that I can9 |3 W9 a' E. \8 Y' T, y' n) }7 s$ C
track my keywords. Without doing this, it isn't possible to see what's converting.
( D6 u& ^4 [" f2 s# ?In Prosper 202, your pixel is located under Setup → Get Postback/Pixel and the screen looks like this:: o& B, A3 j% o" D/ V4 x

Next, I have to cut and paste this pixel into my offer at Ads4Dough./ P. Y' M9 A X7 M4 H+ I* j& V
Click on the offer → pixels → Add a new pixel and this comes up:' a1 G4 C& G. A* V9 T8 l1 R
Make sure that Image is selected under 'Choose a pixel type', name your pixel and now paste the URL
