Set Up Web Hosting
/ H6 h& f! ?* w' ^Getting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said
8 i# e9 Z7 Z( p( s- q5 Habout internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared
8 e8 W, f8 E& I5 S. J4 ahost for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with7 U' c X+ k: @+ a% I; _8 n: o
whoever else is on the same server as you.3 h. Y/ Q+ a! x8 }' X
Speed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast
: m; @$ \3 i+ H1 eenough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 3
- D/ A. e$ Q) r( F' Fseconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck.
. @2 ^1 u$ ^' \1 w W0 |To explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a! \2 K( I9 S2 B6 e% Y
house full of roommates (hosting customers).
+ S) J4 W: S" d+ k- ]$ d0 MIn shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside+ q8 e3 } h4 `
the fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will9 f4 k( q& E' U: ~
fit.# t6 V! ]3 y& T- y# A) Z3 K
Say your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than
9 n( r! @& N9 S3 D v8 y2 uthe rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate+ x/ l8 [1 H6 b2 d! h, o7 Q
their food. Everyone else's food in the house has less space to take advantage of.! d1 g1 C! P8 W. q: E6 R
If you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For
5 i, B T5 [# W W# rany type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.# i; I( j: B7 x; a$ f: o# }3 e
In the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space
4 o. Y/ m/ }) X l1 h: P. Dinside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is# D; w6 C6 h: M% o
partitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time.
. }: g1 k( U7 U; u; k& t( a0 [A dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources
3 l5 ~" Q- X# G1 xbelong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more
9 u" O# Y% ^* Y/ i% |: i5 h: ztraffic, faster.
, G8 ^1 x1 T( K1 H: N5 vAt the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.3 e5 Z# w5 O, d2 C) b! S3 ~& G
Another good discussion of the difference seen by someone using shared vs vps hosting for PPV is
