<p>With DNS Failover, Amazon Route 53 can help detect an outage of your ! j( |3 _. n* E
website and redirect your end users to alternate locations where your ! |" m4 s6 n5 h, e" V8 K$ c' Y
application is operating properly. When you enable this feature, Route 0 B9 M6 j7 b Z0 m! n- k L9 u
53 uses health checks—regularly making Internet requests to your - q7 ]% ?6 [( s6 i, j
application’s endpoints from multiple locations around the world—to ; D i) @1 X1 c j
determine whether each endpoint of your application is up or down. </p> ' v: X- U, |( b, E, V) R8 Q

<p>For ELB endpoints, Route 53 evaluates the health of the load balancer I2 @! r7 \7 H* J5 f' Y9 s8 i1 ?
itself and the health of your application running on the EC2 instances ; ?" s5 z1 U- ^8 e/ K- w
behind it. If any part of the stack goes down, Route 53 detects the 6 b( ?. O4 [7 y6 e8 D
failure, routes traffic away from the load balancer, and directs traffic0 t+ r6 Z7 K) }! T' A$ y4 d
to other healthy ELB endpoints. Route 53 DNS Failover also supports EC2 0 L8 L) ^. {" @% f9 A
endpoints as well as endpoints located in your own datacenter.</p> 0 P( P0 k2 M: a% E0 g8 \. U

<p>Using Route 53 DNS Failover, you can run your primary application " n; K0 B4 a L. N( d+ R U# K
simultaneously in multiple AWS regions around the world. Route 53 + F$ k$ Q1 W! {& j) P( l' N7 r: ~
automatically removes from service any region where your application is / _1 [9 T9 w2 J
unavailable. You can also take advantage of a simple backup site hosted : f" u+ D& l A& i6 C# T( D, E
on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), with Route 53 directing . O2 d! z/ T* }
users to this backup site in the event that your application becomes 9 P# M; _( A G8 n* B B
